Thus, there is no need to aggressively speed up the pace to the point where you have to desperately clutch on the handrails. Higher speeds means higher chance of injury. Thus, keep the speed in check to make sure you are safe. Also, keep in mind to slow down the speed before stepping off. If you just hop off to the side, there is higher risk to twist your ankle.
